Starting the Natural Chemistry PHOSfree Program

Natural Chemistry PhosfreePhosphates continually enter your swimming pool in small amounts from a variety of sources, including personal hygiene products, soaps and detergents, plant debris, fill water, body fluids and waste, fertilizers, rainwater,  and soil.  Phosphates in pool water contribute to the growth of algae in your pool.  The Natural Chemistry® PHOSfree program reduces phosphate levels in pool water to near zero without disturbing the appropriate pool chemical balance.  At these levels, the phosphate-starved algae is easily controlled with normal sanitization.

Getting Ready to Start the PHOSfree Program

  1. Pool must be clean, balanced and algae-free.
  2. Pool filter should be clean.
  3. Water must be tested for phosphate levels (test both pool and fill water).
  4. If metal or mineral stains are present, they must be dealt with before proceeding.  Use Natural Chemistry METALfree to deactivate iron, copper and other trace minerals that cause water discoloration and staining without adding phosphates to the water.

Starting the PHOSfree Program

  • Determine the best way to start from phosphate test results:
  • Determine what type of filter media you have and add product as follows:
    • Sand Filter: Add no more than one liter of PHOSfree or PoolMagic+PHOSfree product through the skimmer per 500 square feet of filter area.  The average range is 1.8 to 3.0 square feet (add product all at one time).
    • DE Filter: Add no more than two liters of PHOSfree or PoolMagic+PHOSfree through the skimmer per 36 square feet of filter area.  Average is 24 to 48 square feet (add product all at one time).
      • If you are experiencing clogging problems with your DE filter:
        • Bump filter and closely monitor to see if pressure rises immediately; continue to bump as pressure rises.  Pressure should stabilize and return to normal.  If the pressure fails to return to normal, clean and recharge the filter.
        • For DE filters with multiport systems, give the system a 20-second rinse, then return to filter setting.
    • Cartridge Filter: Add no more than one liter of PHOSfree or Pool Magic+PHOSfree through the skimmer per 100 square feet of filter area.  Average is 50 to 300 square feet.  If phosphate level is above 1000 ppb, call 888-718-7946 for assistance.
  • Run pool filter at least six filter cycles or a minimum of 48 hours continuous filtration.
  • Backwash or clean PHOSfree from your filter media.  Remember, as a natural product, PHOSfree is not harmful to the environment.
  • Retest pool water.  If you still have not reached a level below 100 ppb of phosphate, repeat steps one through four in starting the Natural Chemistry PHOSfree program.  If the phosphate level is 100 ppb or below, maintain a phosphate-free pool by using Natural Chemistry Pool Perfect+PHOSfree on a weekly basis.

  1. PENNY Says:

Use Phos Free to get rid of phosphates. Filter keeps clogging, even after setting it to rinse for 30 seconds or so. If I backwash it, I won’t have any DE or Phos Free left…sort of shooting myself in the foot. I am on my second program…levels are at the highest on the chart. Any suggestions?
